A recent study conducted by the Institute for Economics and Peace(IEP) ranked 163 countries to determine the most peaceful countries in the world. The 2016 Global Peace Index is the 10th one they have published and from this year’s study, which is based on 23 parameters, found that the world is becoming more divided when it comes to peace.
Costa Rica found itself in the top tier of the list ranking 33 in the world peace index making it the most peaceful country in Central America and the second most peaceful country in Latin America behind Chile who ranked 27. This is a step down from last year when Costa Rica did better ranking as the 32nd most peaceful country in the world. However, it is not because Costa Rica did worst, it is because another country improved in their ranking.
Costa Rica received an overall score of 1.699 where the lower the score the more peaceful the country. The score is based on several factors which include:
Militarization Score: 1.6/5
Society and Security Score: 2.2/5
Domestic and International Conflict Score: 1.2/5
Political Instability Score: 1/5
Violent Crime Score: 2/2/5
Despite this small change in ranking, it is no wonder that Costa Rica is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Central America as well as one of the top rated countries for expats. This is why there is a constant demand for homes in Costa Rica. For example, real estate in Ciudad Colon Costa Rica is at an all time high and other popular locations in the country are also fairing well.
We certainly hope that Costa Rica and the rest of the world will continue to do better for next year’s Global Peace Index!
